Philadelphia Flyers goalie Ron Hextall announced that he was terminating his contract with the National Hockey League club, claiming it is invalid because he is underpaid.

Hextall said he does not plan to attend the Flyers’ training camp, which opens next week for veterans, until the Flyers agree to negotiate a new contract.

The 1987 Vezina Cup winner as the NHL’s top goalie already was going to miss the first 12 games of this season because of a suspension for picking a fight with Montreal’s Chris Chelios in the final game of their Stanley Cup semifinal series last season.
