Pat Chaffey ran for a touchdown and a staunch Oregon State defense held off Stanford as the Beavers defeated the Cardinal, 20-16, Saturday night at Corvallis, Ore.

Troy Bussanich kicked two field goals, both into a stiff wind, as the Beavers won their season and Pacific 10 opener.

Stanford, a 19-3 loser to Arizona last week, fell to 0-2.

Oregon State blocked a field-goal attempt and stopped a Cardinal drive on fourth-and-one at the Oregon State 13-yard line late in the fourth quarter, and came up with three interceptions.

Torey Overstreet killed a late bid by Stanford when he intercepted a pass by Brian Johnson in the end zone with 1:43 to play.

Stanford Coach Dennis Green pulled Smith for Johnson with 10:09 left in the first half, and Stanford made it 14-7 with 7:02 remaining in the half when Tuan Van Le blocked a punt and Kevin Puk scooped up the loose ball, running 40 yards for the score.

It was 17-7 at halftime, but Stanford’s Jon Volpe scored on a 23-yard run with 10:16 to play in the third quarter to make it 17-14. After a field goal made it 20-14, Oregon State quarterback Nick Schichtle took an intentional safety to kill time with 14 seconds left.

On its first possession, Oregon went 75 yards in 16 plays, with Musgrave hitting Tony Hargain in the corner of the end zone with a 10-yard pass. The Ducks bobbled the conversion attempt and led, 6-0.

After McCallum’s 37-yarder made it 12-7, Cal took its only lead at 13-12 on Taylor’s eight-yard scoring pass to Ken Griggs with 3:40 left in the half.

Oregon took the lead for good at 18-13 on a 58-second, 77-yard scoring drive capped by Musgrave’s three-yard touchdown toss to tight end Jeff Thomason with 39 seconds left in the half.
