Fletcher Takes Surfing’s Top Purse

CAMP PENDLETON — Christian Fletcher of San Clemente earned the largest first-place prize money in surfing history Sunday at Lower Trestles State Beach by winning the $100,000 Body Glove Surf Bout.
The unseeded Fletcher, 19, won $31,725 by defeating North Hollywood’s Joey Jenkins, Cardiff’s Colin Smith and San Clemente’s Noah Budroe in the final.
Top-seeded Dino Andino of San Clemente finished fifth, but held on to the overall ratings lead with three tournaments remaining on the 11-city Bud Light U.S. Pro Surfing Tour.
Mike Stewart of Hawaii won the largest payoff ($5,000) in bodyboarding history by defeating Irvine’s Pat Caldwell, Imperial Beach’s Jackie Fisher and Honolulu’s Ben Severson in the final of the Easy Rider Bodyboard Division.
