Sprinters, 3 years and older, will compete tonight in the $20,000-added Inaugural Handicap, the opening program of the fall quarter horse season at Los Alamitos Race Course.

Jockey James Lackey of Ruidoso Downs, N.M., will ride tonight’s probable favorite Heisajoy, a 4-year-old trained by H.L. Hooper. Heisajoy won three of five starts at the New Mexico track this summer and qualified for the World’s Championship Quarter Horse Classic.

The stakes schedule for the 1989 Los Alamitos season includes 28 added-money events, nine of which carry purses of $100,000 or more.

Two-year-old sprinters will compete in a trio of stakes events offering more than $1 million in prize money when they meet in the Dash For Cash, Golden State and Ed Burke Futurities.

Free grandstand admission and general parking is available tonight, the first night of the 10-week season, which features racing Tuesday through Saturday starting at 7:30 p.m.
