Two inmates who escaped from Maricopa County Jail in Phoenix on Sept. 4 have been captured by U. S. Border Patrol agents east of Jacumba, a Border Patrol spokesman said.

Ronald Odell Johnson, 21, who is serving 7 1/2 years for burglary and theft, and Tracy Joseph Douglas, 22, serving 13 years for theft and possession of stolen property, were captured late Sunday on Old Highway 80.

Agents, who suspected that the fugitives’ car was being used for smuggling illegal aliens, chased Johnson and Douglas on foot after the car abruptly pulled off the road, according to Agent Michael Gregg.

Agents searched the car, which had been reported stolen in Phoenix, and found a .22-caliber revolver under the passenger seat, Gregg said.
