Share

Parents and others in the Capistrano Unified School District have joined with the Mission Viejo Co. to form the Challenge Foundation for Exceptional Children, which seeks to raise $60,000 for a physical therapy pool for severely handicapped pupils.

The pool will be built at an elementary school scheduled to open in the fall of 1990. The school will have a capacity of 675 pupils, about 90 of whom will be severely handicapped. The handicapped children will be from all over the county, according to Jacqueline Cerra, district community relations officer.

The project will cost the district $60,000, with the state providing no funds. The Mission Viejo Co. agreed to donate $30,000 on condition that a like amount be contributed by others.

Several companies and individuals have pledged smaller donations to the district. The foundation hopes that the bulk of the amount will be raised through an “Up With People” concert Sept. 30 at UC Irvine’s Bren Events Center.

Tickets for the fund-raiser are $12.50 per person or, in groups of 30 or more, $10. They can be bought through Ticketron or through the Bren center at (714) 856-5000.
