Police arrested a woman and a man Wednesday after witnesses heard gunshots and then reported seeing the woman beat an unidentified man with a handgun, force him into her car and drive away, authorities said.

Rafaela Mendoza, 33, and Domingo Mendoza, 27, relationship unknown, were arrested at 3 p.m., about 90 minutes after several people heard gunshots in the 200 block of Otay Valley Road, said Carol Bahler, a spokeswoman for the Chula Vista Police Department. Bahler said the two were booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Chula Vista police found the suspects and the victim, who suffered gunshot wounds to the stomach, in the 1000 block of Raedel Street in Southeast San Diego. The victim was taken by ambulance to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was undergoing surgery late Wednesday night.
