The city will also apply for a $300,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to install security fencing, access gates and sound walls as part of the city’s 1984 agreement to redevelop Santa Monica Municipal Airport.

Under the agreement, the city will develop an airport noise program, operate the airport until 2015, create a five-acre extension of Clover Park and develop about 37 acres of city-owned land. The city has chosen Reliance Development Group to build about 1 million square feet of commercial and retail space on 30 acres of the tract. The remaining seven acres would be used by the city for cultural and recreation purposes.

At the airport, the city has already resurfaced and relocated taxiways and installed new roadways, sound walls, lighting and drainage systems.

The $300,000 grant would be part of $1.8 million in additional improvements planned for the airport. The balance is expected to be granted by the federal government next year.
