Parthenia School Back in Business

The first few busloads of children arrived Thursday at Parthenia Elementary School in Sepulveda, which was reopened this year after a five-year closure to help relieve chronic overcrowding in Los Angeles-area schools.

About 120 children who could not find classroom space at five other nearby schools were greeted by the newly assembled school faculty and Los Angeles Unified School District Supt. Leonard Britton.

“We’re off and running,” Parthenia Principal Jackie Harris said. “We’re just very happy to be open. It’s quite an experience to be able to start fresh and build from scratch the kind of program people dream about.”

A formal ceremony to reopen the school may be held in coming weeks, district spokesman Shel Erlich said.

District officials said they expect Parthenia to receive an enrollment of about 325 pupils this school year.

Parents of children who cannot find a place at overcrowded schools can choose between Parthenia or an integrated school farther away, Erlich said.
