An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 shook southern and central Mexico, but there were no reports of damage or injuries. The National Seismological Service said the quake, which occurred in the early evening, was centered 250 miles southeast of Mexico City on the coast of Oaxaca state. The earthquake was also felt in the capital. An earthquake of a magnitude 5 is defined as one that can cause considerable damage. An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1 struck Mexico City on Sept. 19, 1985, and a second temblor measuring 7.6 hit the next day, resulting in the deaths of at least 10,000 people and leveling large areas of the city.
