Female Officials Called Too Slow to Be Accurate
Jim Courier, who lost to Pieter Aldrich, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, Monday in the first round of the Volvo/Los Angeles tournament at the L.A. Tennis Center at UCLA, was unhappy to see that female chair umpire Joan Vormbaum and a lineswoman were working his match.
Courier said he doesn’t think female officials belong on the court in men’s matches. “I don’t know what I’m supposed to say about officiating, but it was very poor,” Courier said. “I have a big problem because I don’t think that these referees are fast enough to catch men’s shots. They just don’t get them sometimes. That’s a little bit frustrating. That’s really disappointing. Call me a male chauvinist.”
