THE SIDELINES : Arizonans Lead Tokyo Golf Tourney
An Arizona State University team held a five-stroke lead after the first round of the 54-hole U.S.-Japan Collegiate Friendship Golf Tournament today.
The five-member team, led by Phil Mickelson’s 2-under-par 70, had a 1-over-par 289 total under a system counting each team’s four best scores.
Four U.S. and 13 Japanese men’s teams are playing on the Tanagura Densha Club’s 7,091-yard, par-72 course in Fukushima, northern Japan. Fresno State was second with a 294 total, followed by Georgia Tech at 301 and Ohio State at 303. Nippon College of Physical Education was fifth.
In the women’s competition, Arizona, led by Mette Hageman’s 76, took a one-stroke lead with an 18-over-par 310 total. A University of Texas team was second with 311, followed by Nihon University with 320, Nippon College of Physical Education with 324 and Senshu University with 325.
