Rio Hondo Symphony to Stage First of 4 Free Concerts Oct. 8

Dvorak’s lyric Violin Concerto in A Minor will be the featured composition when the Rio Hondo Symphony performs its first concert of the 1989-90 season at 3 p.m. Oct. 8 in the Whittier High School Auditorium.

The violin soloist will be Melody Bodor of Arcadia, a graduate student at the Juilliard School in New York City. Bodor, the recipient of several awards, has performed as a soloist with orchestras in Redlands, Westwood, Caltech and at the Loma Linda Summer Festival.

Conductor Wayne Reinecke will begin the concert with Mozart’s Overture to “The Magic Flute.” After an intermission, the orchestra will perform Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 in D Major.

The 80-piece community orchestra, in its 57th season, annually presents four free concerts on Sunday afternoons in Whittier. Other dates and featured music are:

Nov. 12, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor, featuring soloist Peter Mack from Dublin, Ireland, and Sibelius’ Symphony No. 1; Feb. 11, Dvorak’s Symphony No. 5 in F Major, Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3 and a vocal cantata with the Chorale Bel Canto; April 1, a young people’s concert featuring winners of the Rio Hondo Symphony Assn.’s annual young artists auditions, “Billy the Kid Suite” by Copland and Leonard Bernstein’s contemporary overture to “Candide” from his third Broadway musical.
