Pepperdine basketball Coach Tom Asbury and women’s tennis Coach Gualberto Escudero were named the school’s co-coaches of the year and Wave tennis player Anna Brunstrom, scholar-athlete of the year.
In his first season as head coach, Asbury led the Waves to a 20-13 record, including a 1-1 mark in the National Invitation Tournament. Escudero’s team last season finished 18-9 overall and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. Brunstrom, who had a 3.92 grade point average (on a 4-point scale), and doubles partner Janna Kovacevich were 14-5 last season and ranked 23rd nationally.
Millie Stanley of Wilshire Country Club shot rounds of 76 and 78 to win the Los Angeles City Senior Women’s golf championship. Two-time defending champion Marie Kuhn of North Hollywood was second with rounds of 79 and 78 in the two-day competition at the Balboa and Encino courses.
Bonnie Durdy, a member of the CoolMax/National Triathlon Training Camp team, set a record of 49:51 in the women’s swim at the Ironman Canada Triathlon Championship, according to training camp officials.
