ORCHESTRAL MASTERPIECES (transcriptions for guitar). Giovanni de Chiaro, guitar. Centaur CRC 2032 (compact disc).
On this genteel recording, at least, Chiaro is no threat to Yamashita’s reputation as the most fearless, exuberant and pointless of transcribers. The playing is tidy and as tasteful as possible in pastel repertory such as MacDowell’s “To a Wild Rose” and “The Swan” from “The Carnival of the Animals.” The “Wedding Dance” from Smetana’s “Moldau” and the finale of the Symphony No. 1 by William Boyce provide the wake-up alarms on this nap-time disc.
