Davis’ Return Triumphant in 47th Aztec Invitational

Marc Davis, who was the first San Diegan to win a Kinney National title while a senior at San Diego High School in 1986, returned to Morley field, site of the Kinney Nationals, and won the men’s race at the 47th Aztec Invitational with a time of 24:48.8 in the 8,000-meter run, thus helping Arizona to the team championship.

Thom Hunt of the San Diego Track Club placed second (25:05.0) and Mark Dani, who ran at Valhalla and Grossmont College, finished third (25:23.3) for UCLA.

While local runners fared well, local colleges did not. UC San Diego and San Diego State finished 15th and 16th, respectively, and U.S. International was 18th.

Irvine took first in the 5,000-meter women’s invitational behind Brigid Stirling’s 17:13.3. Arizona was second and UCLA third. Kira Jorgensen, the former Vista and Rancho Buena Vista runner now at UCLA, placed 19th (18:18.7).

UC San Diego’s women placed eighth, San Diego State was 13th and USIU 14th.

Goshu Tadese of Point Loma Nazarene College set a course record at Westmont College as he ran 8,000 meters in 25:34, helping the Point Loma men to a second-place finish in a four-way meet.

Rick Penman of Point Loma placed second (26:25) and teammate Gus Arce was sixth (26:57).

Cal Poly SLO took first with 34 points to Point Loma’s 36.

Annette Ronnerman was PLNC’s top female runner as she placed fourth in 20:25 on a 5,000-meter course.

PLNC finished third with 55 points in the women’s race and was followed by Westmont (25) and Cal Lutheran (45).

Christian Heritage College women’s team christened its new course with a 17-50 victory over Life Bible College of Los Angeles. Heide Schmidt of CHC was the medalist with a time of 23:07 over the 3.05-mile course.

Life Bible, however, won the men’s meet in an equally disproportionate manner, 18-50. Medalist Matt Messner of Life Bible completed the 4.8-mile course in 25:19.

MEN’S SOCCER

Vince Bianchi and Leo Ronces scored second half goals as USD (6-2) came from behind at Las Vegas to upend Cal State Northridge, 2-1. It was the first loss of the season for Northridge (3-1-2).

Point Loma Nazarene College tied visiting Biola, 2-2, after a scoreless overtime. Serra High School graduate and Biola junior, Jake Segraves, scored both goals for Biola (4-4-2) to lead, 2-0, at halftime. Junior halfback Steve Cokkinis and freshman forward Jim Novak each made a unassisted goal for the Point Loma Nazarene (2-3-3).

Noel Pekel tied the game for U.S. International early in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as visiting Cal State Bakersfield scored twice in overtime to hand the Gulls (0-7) their seventh consecutive defeat of the season. Bakersfield (9-0) is ranked No. 7 among NCAA Division II teams.

UCSD’s men’s soccer team had its 31-game unbeaten streak snapped late Friday night when it suffered a 1-0 loss to The Masters College.

VOLLEYBALL

UCSD’s women’s volleyball team eased through the quarters and semis of the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, but fell three games to one to Memlo in the final, 4-15, 15-10, 15-11.

To get to the final the Tritons (12-8) got by Claremont-Scripps, 15-3, 15-4, in the quarterfinals, then defeated La Verne, 15-13, 15-10. Tritons Dianna Klintworth (22 kills) and Elizabeth Tan (19 kills) were named to the all-tournament team.

Heather Kelly, a freshman, led USIU (3-6) with 18 kills as the Gulls defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 15-2, 15-13, 15-12. Cal Poly fell to 6-6.

WATER POLO

Ninth-ranked UCSD defeated three top-20 schools in the Brown University Invitational in Providence, R.I.

In the first game, Greg Goodrich scored four goals to lead UCSD past No. 10 Navy, 9-7. Jason Brown threw in four goals against No. 14 Iona as UCSD went on to a 16-1 victory. In the last one, Goodrich and Peter McConville, a Mira Mesa High graduate, each had four goals in a 16-1 victory over No. 16 Massachusetts.

The Tritons conclude the tourney today against No. 18 Harvard.
