Gov. George Deukmejian on Friday appointed Martyn E. Lindley of Long Beach to run the proposed Frankfurt Office of Trade and Investment.

The governor is scheduled to go to Italy and Germany on Oct. 7 to open the Frankfurt office. It will be the fourth overseas facility established by Deukmejian to help promote trade between California and foreign nations.

Noting the approaching consolidation of the European Common Market in 1992 and the fact that foreign trade already accounts for 1 in every 10 state paychecks, the governor said, “California must act vigorously and without delay to promote its products and raise its profile in this affluent market of 325 million consumers.

“By opening an office on the European continent and launching a strong presence at major trade shows, I am convinced we can expand California trade with Europe, creating more jobs for our people at home.”

A trade development specialist for the World Trade Commission, Lindley, 29, is fluent in German and has advised California companies on West German business opportunities and marketing strategies. The annual salary for his new job will be $48,000. The position does not require Senate confirmation.

Lindley will report to James Phillips, California’s London-based managing director for Europe.

Deukmejian is scheduled to return from his European trip on Oct. 19.
