The principals of four San Diego County schools that were selected for the 1989 National School Recognition Program will travel to Washington to receive awards Thursday from President Bush and Secretary of Education Lauro Cavazos.

The schools to be honored are Mt. Carmel High School in Poway, Vista High School, Oak Grove Middle School in Jamul and Valley Center Middle School.

“San Diego County did exceptionally well in this competition,” county Supt. of Schools Thomas C. Boysen said. “I’m pleased that our county will be well-represented at the White House.”

More than 500 public secondary schools throughout the nation were nominated for the awards. The field was finally narrowed to 176 winners from 42 states. California led the nation with 24 winners.

The awards were made based on test scores, teaching practices and levels of parent and community involvement. In addition, each nominated school received a two-day visit last spring by a team from the U. S. Department of Education. The review teams interviewed students, parents and teachers, and analyzed educational records.
