Ferry a Lifeline for Self-Reliant Island Residents

As emergency aid trickles in to St. Croix, residents of that devastated island and many on neighboring St. Thomas have taken matters into their own hands, shuttling back and forth over the 27 miles of choppy seas with care packages--boxes of provisions, batteries, water, food and sometimes just concern.

With the St. Thomas airport closed much of this week because of the hurricane and torrential rains that followed, the ferry boat was the only way to go.

Taking the trip was a testament to the islanders’ fortitude.

On Monday, about two dozen passengers succumbed to seasickness during the 2 1/2-hour bone-jarring, stomach-wrenching journey aboard the Lady Caroline en route to St. Croix.

As Lady Caroline eased into storm-savaged St. Croix, nestling next to a Coast Guard cutter, many passengers, still looking dazed and sick, heard someone quip: “Welcome to St. Croix, paradise.”

The harbor was, of course, in Gallows Bay.
