Continuing to show signs of the form that put him in the top 10 five years ago, Anders Jarryd of Sweden upset eighth-seeded Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, Wednesday in the second round of a $425,000 tennis tournament in San Francisco.
Also reaching the quarterfinals were fifth-seeded Kevin Curren, who defeated Todd Witsken, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, and fourth-seeded Tim Mayotte, who beat Jim Pugh, 6-2, 7-6.
Against the power-serving Zivojinovic, Jarryd dominated with his serve. He lost only four points while serving in the first set and never had to face a break point in the third set.
Jarryd, who was ranked No. 6 in 1984 and gradually fell to No. 32 last year, broke Zivojinovic in the sixth game at love and then served to win the match.
Jarryd, 28, has emerged as a favorite in the top of the draw with the absence of John McEnroe, who withdrew Tuesday because of a knee injury.
McEnroe’s place was taken by Brian Garrow, who lost in a first- round match to Andrew Sznajder of Canada, 6-4, 6-4.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals Wednesday was Kelly Evernden of New Zealand, who defeated Leif Shiras, 7-6, 6-2.
Jean-Philippe Fleurian of France shocked third-seeded Horst Skoff of Austria, 6-3, 6-4, in a $225,000 tournament at Bordeaux, France.
Fleurian, ranked No. 111 in the world, advanced to the quarterfinals by beating the No. 22 player.
Fleurian will next play fifth-seeded Goran Prpic of Yugoslavia. Prpic defeated Martin Strelba of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 7-5.
Emilio Sanchez of Spain, seeded second, advanced with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory over Marko Ostoja of Yugoslavia. Another Spaniard, Thomas Carbonell, beat Jens Peter of West Germany, 7-5, 6-1.
Claudio Pistolesi, Guillermo Perez Roldan and Sergio Brughera reached the quarterfinals with second-round victories in a $123,400 tournament at Palermo, Italy.
Brughera of Spain, seeded fifth, defeated Diego Perez of Uruguay, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
Perez Roldan of Argentina, seeded seventh, beat Claudio Mezzadri of Switzerland, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Pistolesi defeated fellow Italian Stefano Pescosolido, 7-5, 6-3.
