San Diego Sports et Cetera : Sockers Sign Defender; Zungul Agrees to Terms

The Sockers signed defender Arturo Velazco, 24, to a one-year contract Thursday and have agreed to terms with veteran forward Steve Zungul.

Velazco, a first-year player and native San Diegan, has played with the Nomads since 1986 and was a member of the Auto Trader reserve team.

Zungul, 35, doesn’t expect to see a great deal of playing time. Zungul says he stayed in shape during the off-season but that his arthritic hips sometimes limit his running ability.

“The way I feel right now,” he said, “I don’t think that will be a problem.”

Zungul said his contract will be the same as last year, when he was paid the Major Indoor Soccer League’s minimum salary of $25,000.
