Mike Gaddis ran for 172 yards in 22 carries and three touchdowns, and freshman quarterback Tink Collins threw a 51-yard touchdown pass as No. 16 Oklahoma beat Kansas, 45-6, Saturday at Lawrence, Kan., in the Big Eight opener for both teams.

“It was kind of hard to get motivated,” said Gaddis, who doesn’t have the acceleration of other Oklahoma backs but is a bruising runner when he breaks into the secondary.

Gaddis said Sooner Coach Gary Gibbs “gets us real fired up. It was kind of an emotional locker room at the half. Today was one of my best games so far, especially in the second half.”

Collins, the fifth quarterback Oklahoma has used in six games, completed five of 12 passes for 88 yards.

Kansas (2-3) scored in the closing minutes of the first half to move within 17-6 on a 17-yard pass from Kelly Donohoe to John Baker.

But the Sooners (3-1) stung the Jayhawks with two third-quarter scores to put the game away.

The Jayhawks gave up a quick score at the start of the third quarter when their on-side kick was covered by the Sooners.

“We thought it was there,” Kansas Coach Glen Mason said. “We just kicked it a little too far. You have to take chances like that to keep momentum going your way.”

The on-side kick was covered by Oklahoma’s Tracy Gordon. The Sooners drove 48 yards in seven plays with Kenyon Rasheed going the final yard for a 24-6 lead.

After the Jayhawks punted, Oklahoma went 66 yards in eight plays with Gaddis scoring on a 33-yard run. Oklahoma drove 55 yards in 11 plays to score again in the fourth quarter, with Gaddis going the final four yards for a 38-6 lead with 14:03 to play.

Oklahoma St. 27, Wyoming 7--Gerald Hudson ran for 148 yards and a touchdown and Mike Gundy became the Big Eight’s career leader in touchdown passes as the Cowboys won at Stillwater, Okla.

Oklahoma State (1-3) had 490 yards of offense and took advantage of five first-half turnovers by Wyoming (1-4).

Hudson carried only once in the second half before leaving with a slightly bruised knee. His replacement, Vernon Brown, had 106 yards as the Cowboys had a running back surpass 100 yards for the 22nd consecutive game.

Gundy’s 18-yard scoring pass to Jarrod Green midway through the third quarter gave him 43 for his career, surpassing the conference record of 42 set by David Humm of Nebraska. He also threw for 152 yards to move into second place on the Big Eight’s career passing yardage list and total offense list.

Iowa St. 25, Tulane 24--Bret Oberg’s nine-yard touchdown run in the final minute and the subsequent two-point conversion lifted the Cyclones at New Orleans.

Oberg scored on a quarterback draw, and running back Blaise Bryant swept left for the two-point conversion as Iowa State improved to 2-2 and Tulane dropped to 2-3.
