A man who robbed a savings and loan institution in Stanton on Monday was shot and killed by an armored-car guard as he attempted to make his getaway, authorities said.

A spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said the robber, who wore a bushy wig, was shot at least twice when he pointed a handgun at an armored-car guard who was about to make a delivery to the Fidelity Federal Savings & Loan Assn.

Sheriff’s deputies later identified the robber’s weapon as an air pistol. The dead man was identified late Monday night as Samuel Borunda, 43, whose hometown had not been positively determined.

Deputies gave this account:

The robber entered the savings and loan, at the corner of Beach Boulevard and Chapman Avenue, shortly after 1:30 p.m. and demanded money from a teller. With loot in hand, the bandit headed for the rear entrance, where he had parked his getaway bicycle. But as he left the building with the money, an armored vehicle operated by Armored Transport of California Inc. pulled into the rear driveway and stopped.

On seeing the armored vehicle, the bandit scampered back inside the building, and one of four guards followed.

“The suspect pointed a gun at the security guard, who fired at least two shots. The suspect fell to the ground,” Sheriff’s Lt. Richard J. Olson said.

Paramedics rushed the wounded man to Humana Hospital in Westminster.

“I could see them working on him on the floor and then on the stretcher,” said Johnny Carter, of Fullerton, who was eating a cheeseburger at the Jack-in-the-Box next door when the incident occurred.

The bandit was pronounced dead about two hours later. Olson said homicide detectives tested the guard for gunshot residue and will continue investigations into the incident.
