Jose Melchor, director of state and federal projects for the San Ysidro school district, has been named interim superintendent, replacing Dr. Gilbert Anzaldua.

School officials announced Anzaldua’s resignation Friday and said he will be paid through June, according to his contract. The district declined to say why he stepped down.

Melchor, 41, who takes over immediately, said he will meet with heads of several school district departments soon, assuring them it is business as usual.

Before coming to San Ysidro, Melchor was an elementary school principal in the Coachella Valley Unified School District in Thermal and served as a project director and teacher in the Palm Springs Unified School District, school board president Toby Mange said.

Melchor earned a bachelor’s degree in education at San Diego State University and two master’s degrees, also in education, at San Bernardino State College and Azusa Pacific College.
