Pacifica High School Coach Bill Craven said he hasn’t seen his tailback, Chris Shockley, have a poor rushing game in the three years he has played at the school.

Thursday night, Shockley surpassed even Craven’s expectations by gaining 229 yards in 23 carries and leading Pacifica to a 43-19 Garden Grove League victory over Santiago at Garden Grove High.

Pacifica’s ground game tore Santiago’s defense to shreds, as the Mariners totaled 380 yards. Shockley scored three touchdowns on runs of one, two and 22 yards. He was complemented by Mike Way (46 yards, one touchdown), Roy Atkins (45 yards) and Derrick Nicholson (43 yards).

Pacifica’s defense was led by rover back Randy Maldonado, who had two interceptions. Maldonado’s first interception set up Shockley’s one-yard scoring plunge in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Maldonado picked off Mike Carrasco’s pass and ran 23 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown.

Shockley gained 136 of his yards in the first half before being shaken up after a collision with Santiago’s Jason Hooper on a kickoff return before halftime. But Shockley went 59 yards from scrimmage on Pacifica’s first play of the second half to set up his two-yard scoring run over left tackle.

On the ensuing kickoff, Pacifica’s John Abrego recovered Kevin Gillian’s fumble at the Santiago 22. On the next play, Shockley swept around the left side to score, stretching the Mariners’ lead to 36-13.

It was a rough night for Santiago quarterbacks. Starter Chad Carter left the game after the first quarter with a mild concussion. Carrasco, Carter’s replacement, completed only 11 of 29 passes for 107 yards and was sacked twice.

Pacifica is 2-2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Garden Grove League. Santiago dropped to 1-4 and 0-2.
