20th-Ranked San Diego State Beats Stanford, 2-0, in Soccer

San Diego State goalie Bryan Finnerty recorded his fourth shutout in eight starts as the 20th-ranked men’s soccer team (7-3-1) defeated Stanford, 2-0, in a nonconference game at home.

Dain DeForest assisted on both goals, the first by Eric Wynalda and the second from Juan SantaMaria.

Scott Rommel scored two goals, and Chris Jones assisted on three others as UC San Diego defeated visiting Whittier, 6-2, in a nonconference game. UCSD is 6-3-2, Whittier 3-7.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Loyola Marymount defeated University of San Diego, 15-5, 15-9, 15-11, in a West Coast Conference game at the University of San Diego. Suzanne LeSatz, Cindy Silldorff and Angie Rais had five kills each for the Toreras (1-12, 0-2). Loyola Marymount, led by Kerry House with 13 kills, improved to 5-8, 5-0.

Allison Hensleit had 12 kills and teammate Dianna Klintworth added eight to lead UCSD (14-9) over host Biola, 15-7, 15-9, 14-16, 15-5. Biola fell to 10-7.

TENNIS

Tickets will go on sale Sunday for a Nov. 21 exhibition match at the Sports Arena between John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors.

The match will benefit the SDSU Athletic Foundation.

GOLF

U.S. International is ninth and SDSU 12th following the second round of the 11th Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.

Tulsa leads with 606. USIU has 638 and SDSU has 658.

Cathy Mockett of Tulsa is the individual leader with 149. USIU’s Wendela Manting is 24th (157) and teammate Yuri Maeda is 32nd (159). SDSU’s Jennifer Holt is 34th (160).

BASEBALL

Adam Schwindt, a University of San Diego pitcher, has been upgraded to fair condition and has awakened from a drug-induced coma, according to a Sharp Memorial Hospital spokesman.

Schwindt was hospitalized two weeks ago after being struck in the head by a batted ball in a pickup baseball game. After three hours of surgery to help reduce a blood clot near his brain, Schwindt was listed in critical condition and kept in a comatose state to help alleviate brain activity while the swelling went down.
