CHICAGO — Rapidly expanding Midway Airlines has ordered 33 new German-built Dornier 328 twin-engine turboprop airplanes and has options to purchase 40 more, spokeswoman Sandra Allen said today.
The 33 aircraft will cost $244 million. Earlier this year, Midway ordered 74 McDonnell Douglas jets for $2 billion and purchased various assets of Eastern Airlines, including 16 DC-9 jets and Eastern’s Philadelphia operations, for $210 million.
“The 328s will be used to add frequency on some routes and for replacement” of some of the Dornier 228s that currently make up Midway’s commuter fleet, Allen said.
Although the new aircraft will not be available for service until 1993, Midway in the interim will lease from Dornier 12 Brazilian Embraer commuter planes. Nine of those will be in service by next summer, Allen said.
The Dornier 328 is a 30-seat aircraft. The 228 seats 19.
“That means a flight attendant on each flight” on the new aircraft, Allen noted. The current fleet does not use flight attendants.
