NHL Roundup : Islanders Score Four Goals in Third Period and Win, 5-2

The New York Islanders scored four times within five minutes in the third period and rallied to beat the Canucks, 5-2, in a National Hockey League game Monday at Vancouver.

Goals by David Volek, Doug Crossman, Brent Sutter and Alan Kerr wiped out a 2-1 Vancouver lead.

Volek, who assisted on two other goals, tied the score when he batted in a rebound at 14:06, Crossman and Sutter scored on power plays and Kerr added an empty-net goal to complete the scoring.

New York, which had 30 shots on goal, had 19 of those in the third period. Vancouver goalie Steve Weeks kept the Canucks in the game until the last five minutes.

The Canucks had 37 shots on Glen Healy, who made several difficult saves during the scoreless opening period, most of them during two Vancouver power plays.

Patrick Flatley scored the Islanders’ first goal at 5:28 of the second period, converting a pass from Volek. The play was started by a sharp pass from defenseman Jeff Norton in the neutral zone.

Petri Skriko and Paul Reinhart scored Vancouver’s goals. Reinhart’s goal gave the Canucks a 2-1 lead at 5:59 of the third period.

Boston 2, Montreal 0--Cam Neeley and Randy Burridge scored in the first period and goalie Reggie Lemelin earned his 10th NHL shutout as the Bruins won at Boston.

It was the Bruins’ first regular-season victory over the Canadiens since Feb. 4, 1988. The Bruins were 0-7-1 against Montreal last season.
