A Chatsworth man who broke into his ex-girlfriend’s Burbank apartment Tuesday after she refused to let him in was shot and wounded in self-defense by a friend of the woman, the Burbank Police Department reported.

Jeff Nichols, 20, fled the apartment after he was shot about 1 p.m. but was arrested by police who stopped his car a few blocks away, Sgt. Don Goldberg said. Nichols was in good condition at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center jail ward, where he was being held on suspicion of burglary, Goldberg said.

Nichols had gone to visit Leslie Jackson, 19, at her apartment in the 1600 block of Grismer Avenue and broke through a window after she refused to let him in, Goldberg said.

Matthew Bailey, 26, of Dallas, Texas, shot Nichols once in the right leg after Nichols allegedly struck Jackson and threatened to kill her, Goldberg said. Bailey acted in self-defense and was not arrested, Goldberg said.
