Snow Advances in Wheelchair Tennis Tournament

Defending champion Randy Snow of Birmingham, Ala., advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open Championship of wheelchair tennis Tuesday with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Thierry Callier of France.

Snow’s victory was the highlight of the first full day of singles competition at the Racquet Club of Irvine. Also advancing were Brad Parks of San Clemente, with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Victor Escamilla of Sunnyvale, and Diamond Bar’s Chip Parmelly, who defeated John Greer of Kaneohe, Hawaii, 6-1, 6-1.

In first-round women’s singles, Tiki Avashi of Israel defeated Monica Braun of San Bernardino, 6-0, 6-1, and Maureen Hannon of Sunnyvale beat Patty Rollinson of Reno, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6.

Parks teamed with Chantal Vandierendonck of Holland to advance to the fourth round in the mixed doubles competition, defeating Marc Nadel of Martinez, Ga., and Jeannie Nicklos of Houston, 6-3, 6-2. Mark Shepard of Solana Beach and Mary Jones of Fountain Valley also advanced to the mixed doubles quarterfinals, defeating David Conklin of La Crosse, Wis., and Michelle Hemme of Redlands, 6-2, 6-2.

The men’s singles matches start at 9:30 a.m. today with women’s singles beginning at 12:30 p.m. The mixed doubles quarterfinals are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Thursday.
