The San Diego State men’s team will be going for its fifth consecutive victory tonight at 7:30 when it meets UCLA at Aztec Bowl. The Bruins are ranked No. 1 nationally in the Intercollegiate Soccer Assn. of America’s Coaches poll.

The Aztecs, ranked 20th last week by Soccer America, recently defeated ninth-ranked Stanford and won the Lettermen’s tournament at Southern Methodist University.

SDSU (8-3-1) is led by sophomore forward Jeff Betts (six goals), junior forward Eric Wynalda (four goals) and senior goalkeeper Bryan Finnerty (five shutouts). Senior goalkeeper Anton Nisti holds the Bruins’ career shutout record (35) and has 10 this season. UCLA is 11-0-1.

Jon Sveinsson of U.S. International scored late in the second half on a penalty kick, but the Gulls lost to Loyola Marymount, 2-1, in a nonconference game in Los Angeles. USIU dropped to 1-13; Loyola Marymount is 2-10.

Christian Heritage suffered its fifth consecutive shutout and seventh consecutive loss, 4-0, to Cal Baptist in Riverside. Christian Heritage is 1-8-0.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

USIU’s Sally Weigand and Erin Paterson scored unassisted goals as the Gulls defeated UC Irvine, 2-1, at Irvine. The Gulls are 5-8, UCI 3-8-2.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Point Loma Nazarene won the first game but lost the next three in a 12-15, 15-4, 15-10, 15-1 nonconference defeat by Biola in La Mirada. Jamie Wheat had seven kills for the Crusaders (11-5). Biola improved to 11-7.

BOXING

Matthew Hilton of Montreal knocked out Tim Williams of San Diego in the 10th round of their middleweight fight in Las Vegas.

Hilton halted Williams 25 seconds into the 10th with a left-right combination to the head. Hilton (162 pounds) went down in the first round from a right to the head but still led on two of the three judges’ scorecards through nine rounds.

Hilton, who held the International Boxing Federation junior-middleweight title for 16 months until losing it last November, improved to 30-1 with 24 knockouts. Williams (163) fell to 16-11-1 and lost for the eighth time in 10 fights.
