TENNIS ROUNDUP - Hogstedt No Problem for Lendl

Ivan Lendl, the world’s top-ranked player, easily defeated unseeded Swede Thomas Hogstedt, 6-2, 6-2, Friday night and advanced to the semifinals of the $492,500 Australian Indoor championships at Sydney.

Lendl, seeking his third Australian Indoor title, will face Niklas Kroon of Sweden in the semifinals today. Kroon saved three match points in beating Mark Woodforde of Australia, 0-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).

Gretchen Magers rallied from a 4-6, 0-3 deficit to defeat Laura Golarsa of Italy, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the Soviet Union’s first pro tennis tournament.

Mary Joe Fernandez outlasted Yugoslav teen-ager Monica Seles, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), to earn a semifinal berth at a tournament at Filderstadt, West Germany.

No. 1-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina defeated Hana Mandlikova, 6-3, 6-0 and second-seeded Zina Garrison defeated Gigi Fernandez, 6-4, 6-2.

John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors advanced to today’s semifinals of a $225,000 tournament in Toulouse, France.

Top-seeded McEnroe defeated Magnus Gustafsson of Sweden, 7-5, 6-3, and Connors eliminated Jerome Potier of France, 6-3, 6-1.
