El Toro Goes Over and Through Irvine

Wide receiver Rob Johnson and tailback Jerome Oakman each scored two touchdowns to lead unbeaten El Toro High School to a 37-12 South Coast League victory over Irvine Friday night in the league opener for both teams.

Johnson had six catches for 123 yards and Oakman rushed for 119 yards in nine carries for the Chargers (6-0, 1-0).

El Toro quarterback Steve Stenstrom completed 17 of 19 passes for 285 yards and threw for two touchdowns. He was intercepted once.

El Toro took a 7-0 lead when Oakman scored on a five-yard touchdown run with 7:47 left in the first quarter. The Chargers moved ahead, 14-0, on a 47-yard touchdown pass play from Stenstrom to Johnson with 8:24 left in the second quarter.

Irvine (2-4, 0-1) closed the gap to 14-6 on a 28-yard touchdown pass play from quarterback Deron McCoy to fullback Randy Martin less than three minutes later, but the Chargers took a 21-6 lead when Stenstrom hooked up with Johnson again, this time for an 18-yard touchdown with 2:38 left in the second quarter.

Halfback Chad Vickers led Irvine with 75 yards in 13 carries, and Martin rushed for 64 yards in nine carries.
