Holtz Rallies to Win at Ventura Raceway

Mark Holtz of Lyndon, Wash., outdistanced a 20-car field to capture the United States Auto Club 50-lap Western State Championship TQ Midget main event at Ventura Raceway on Saturday.

Holtz came from sixth place to pass leader Mark Ward of Canoga Park on Lap 17, fighting off hard-charging Kara Hendrick of Chino and season points leader Gary Howard of Anaheim Hills, who finished second and third.

The 10-lap semi-main event qualified the top four finishers for the main event. Sean Birmingham of Torrance placed first, followed by Tracy Van Blargen of Camarillo, Glenn Williams of Sylmar and Ron Wade of Harbor City.

The top four finishers in each eight-lap heat race also qualified for the main event, with heat-race winners Steve Kellick of Bakersfield, Frank Dieny Jr. of Burbank, Mike Perine of Camarillo and Carl Nigh of Ventura leading the way.

Jay Drake of Valencia led from start to finish in winning the four-lap Trophy-Dash race.
