Convent

Second Generation, Los Angeles, the largest organization of sons and daughters of Jewish Holocaust survivors in the United States, is committed to perpetuating the authentic memory of the Holocaust. We commend the many Jewish and Catholic organizations and leaders around the world who have worked to bring the controversy surrounding the presence of a Carmelite convent at Auschwitz to an end.

In particular, we would like to thank Archbishop Roger Mahony of Los Angeles, Cardinals Albert Decourtray of Lyons, France, Jean-Marie Lustiger of Paris, Godfried Danneels of Brussels, John O’Connor of New York, Edmund Szoka of Detroit, and Bernard Law of Boston for their prompt and unequivocal support in urging that the terms of the 1987 Geneva Agreement to relocate the convent be adhered to. They, as we, recognized that the convent never belonged on the grounds of Auschwitz. Only silence belongs at Auschwitz.

We look forward to the close of this divisive chapter in Jewish-Catholic relations.
