Nick Faldo of England capped a late rally with a 20-foot eagle putt on the 36th hole Sunday to beat Ian Woosnam of Wales in the final of the $528,000 World Matchplay Championship at Virginia Water, England.

Faldo, who did not lead in the match until the last hole, trailed by three holes with just seven left in the two-round final. But he won the 12th and 13th holes to pull within a shot, then tied the match on the 16th with a birdie.

Woosnam and Faldo both birdied the 17th before Faldo eagled the par-five 18th for the victory and a check of $160,000, which organizers said was the biggest in European golf history.

Faldo, 32, said he will donate his winnings to children’s charities.

George Archer, who turned 50 on Oct. 1 to become eligible for the PGA Seniors Tour, made a par on the second extra hole at Abilene, Tex., to win a $300,000 senior tournament--his first event on the over-50 circuit.

Archer got the victory over Orville Moody and Jimmy Powell, who both sent tee shots into the water on the par-3 16th hole.

Amy Benz shot a 71 and posted the first victory of her career, winning a $321,000 women’s tournament by four shots over Patti Rizzo and Erika Nakajima at Ichihara, Japan.
