Winners of the sandcastle competition held last week in Corona del Mar by the Orange County chapter of the American Institute of Architects have been announced.
The grand prize went to architect Joseph Woolet of Orange for an interpretation of classical Greek ruins.
In the sandcastle category, first prize was awarded to Dougherty & Dougherty, Newport Beach; second prize: Wimberly, Allison, Tong & Goo, Newport Beach (the firm that also won the People’s Choice award); third prize: Ralph Allen Architects, Santa Ana.
In the sand-sculpture category, WRC Associates of Newport took first prize for a spaceship; Lee & Sakahara, Costa Mesa, won second prize for “Under Pressure,” a giant foot stepping on the body of a man; and the Peridian Group, Irvine, snagged third prize with a palm tree with human hands for leaves.
The judges panel included Kevin Consey, outgoing director of Newport Harbor Art Museum, Orange County Supervisor Thomas F. Riley and Los Angeles Times architecture critic Sam Hall Kaplan.
