Woman Pleads Guilty in $3,000 Adoption Scam

A northern Utah woman accused of bilking a Los Angeles couple out of more than $3,000 in an adoption scam pleaded guilty Tuesday to two counts of theft by deception.

Rae Jean Page Lewis, 38, of Riverdale, Utah, was scheduled to stand trial in 2nd District Court on three fraud counts for allegedly taking money between March and May in connection with a bogus adoption plan.

Instead, Lewis entered guilty pleas to two counts in exchange for prosecutors dismissing a third charge and agreeing not to file an additional five forgery counts, the Weber County attorney’s office said.

Judge David Roth scheduled sentencing Nov. 8.

Prosecutors said Lewis was arrested last summer after a six-week investigation prompted by a Los Angeles couple who claimed they never received a baby promised to them by the suspect.
