ON THE SIDELINES : 5 Owens Award Finalists Named
Five of the nation’s top track and field athletes, including world record holder Roger Kingdom in the high hurdles, were named finalists today for the annual Jesse Owens Award.
The award will be announced Dec. 1 in Washington during the convention of the Athletics Congress, the governing body for track and field in the United States. Ballots were sent earlier this week to Athletics Congress officials and members of the news media.
The other finalists are Mike Conley, World Indoor and World Cup triple jump champion; Sandra Farmer-Patrick, who set two American records and won the World Cup championship in the 400-meter hurdles; Dave Johnson, whose 8,549 points in the decathlon was the second-highest score in U.S. history, and PattiSue Plumer, who set an American record in the 5,000-meter run.
