MONTE VISTA, Colo. — A jetliner with 104 people aboard made an emergency landing at a small airport Wednesday after losing electrical power, running off the short runway into some mud.
A passenger said the Northwest Airlines DC-9 filled with smoke after the landing and the captain took an ax to the exits to get them open. The pilot suffered cuts and bruises, and one of the 99 passengers aboard was hospitalized, authorities said.
The cause of the malfunction was not known.
