TENNIS ROUNDUP : Edberg Gets 6-1, 6-3 Win at Tokyo

Top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden defeated Glenn Michibata of Canada, 6-1, 6-3, Wednesday in the first round of the $627,500 Seiko tournament at Tokyo.

In other first-round matches, Ronald Agenor of Haiti struggled 2 hours 22 minutes for a 6-7 (7-4), 6-2, 7-5 victory over Shuzo Matsuoka of Japan; Rick Leach beat Brad Drewett of Australia, 6-2, 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5), and Darren Cahill of Australia defeated Richard Matuszewski, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-2.

Top-seeded Steffi Graf reached the quarterfinals of the European Indoor with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Dinky van Rensburg of South Africa at Zurich, Switzerland.

In other second-round matches, fourth-seeded teen-ager Monica Seles of Yugoslavia defeated Lori McNeil, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, and Karine Quentrec of France beat Eva Pfaff of West Germany, 6-4, 6-3.

In first-round matches, third-seeded Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia beat Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany, 7-5, 6-3; sixth-seeded Hana Mandlikova of Australia beat Radka Zrubakova of Czechoslovakia, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1; Gretchen Magers defeated Italy’s Linda Ferrando, 6-2, 6-2, and Laura Golarsa of Italy outlasted Jill Hetherington of Canada, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

Laura Garrone of Italy surprised seventh-seeded Betsy Nagelsen, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), in a $100,000 tournament at Bayonne, France.

In second-round matches, top-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain beat Nicole Jagerman of the Netherlands, 6-1, 6-4; Bettina Bunge of West Germany defeated Laura Garrone of Italy, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2; third-seeded Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria got past Rachel McQuinlan of Australia, 6-1, 6-7 (9-7), 6-3, and Claudia Porwik of West Germany beat Laura Lapi of Italy, 7-5, 7-5.
