ON THE SIDELINES : No-Show Mahorn Italy-Bound?
Rick Mahorn, who is under contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves but has yet to report to the NBA expansion team, has a one-year, $750,000 agreement with an Italian team, his agent says.
Mahorn’s agent, Al Waldon, said he reached agreement with Verano in the Italian league on Thursday, but said Mahorn has not signed the contract. The deal includes housing and the use of a Mercedes.
Mahorn’s NBA contract, which has two years left on it, will pay $625,000 this season.
Waldon said he and Mahorn are scheduled to leave for Italy on Monday.
“Rick is taking all his stuff with him, and if he likes the city, he won’t be coming back,” Waldon said.
Timberwolves President Bob Stein said the team will sue Mahorn, the team’s No. 1 choice in the expansion draft, if he tries to play in Europe.
