A man who was fleeing from witnesses who had seen him attempting to break into a car, ran across the busy Santa Ana Freeway during the afternoon rush hour Friday was killed when he attempted to jump onto a passing truck, California Highway Patrol officers said. The unidentified man was believed to be in his mid 20s.

CHP Officer Bob Weaver said the man was seen tampering with a car in the parking lot of the Radisson Hotel on Telegraph Road in the City of Commerce.

“The witnesses started to chase him and he ran onto the freeway, ran all the way across the northbound and then the southbound lanes and then saw a slow-moving 18-wheeler (semi-trailer truck rig) loaded with 19,000 pounds of steel. He tried to jump on and escape but apparently lost his footing, dropped to the ground and was run over by the wheels of the trailer,” Weaver said.
