Police were searching Friday for a youth believed to have shot and wounded a young basketball player as he played on the courts with a friend in Magnolia Tree Park in Tustin, authorities said.

Chealvy Ly, 19, of Santa Ana was listed in serious but stable condition Friday at United Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he was treated for shotgun wounds in the back, legs and right arm, Tustin Police Lt. Steve Crane said.

Ly, who played varsity basketball at Tustin High School, was shot about 10 p.m. Thursday in the park at Fig Tree Drive and Cherrywood Lane, Crane said, adding that investigators have been unable to determine a motive.

According to witnesses, a youth believed to be about 17 watched Ly and his friend shoot baskets for a short time, and then left. He returned about 20 minutes later and shot Ly with a 12-gauge shotgun, Crane said.

“He didn’t speak or make any gesture,” he said. “He just fired once and calmly walked away.”

Although wounded, Ly ran to the nearby Tustin Meadows housing project to call for help. His friend was not hurt, police said.
