Western’s Fast Start Drops Magnolia, 41-20

Western High School scored on five of its six first-half possessions to defeat Magnolia, 41-20, in an Orange League game Friday at Handel Stadium.

Western allowed Magnolia (0-2, 0-7) only eight yards total offense in the first half, holding the Sentinels scoreless until the final 3 minutes 17 seconds of the third quarter.

“These kind of games are no fun; it is hard to keep things in perspective,” Western Coach Jim Howell said.

Halfback Barry Howell led Western to its sixth victory in seven games. The Pioneers are 2-0 in league play. Howell scored two touchdowns and gained 119 of Western’s 324 total yards rushing.

Magnolia running back Ariel Courvetier scored on runs of 35 and 44 yards. He gained 83 of the Sentinels’ 105 yards rushing.
