Tacoma defeated the Sockers, 2-1, in an exhibition game Friday night at Tacoma. Brent Goulet scored the game-winner with 3:58 remaining in the third quarter, breaking a 1-1 tie. Veteran Steve Zungul scored the Sockers’ lone goal midway through the first quarter off an assist from Rod Castro.

Paul Holocher scored two goals to lead No. 2 Santa Clara to a 5-0 rout of the University of San Diego in a West Coast Conference game at Santa Clara (13-0-1, 2-0). USD (11-5-1, 0-2) has lost three of its past four games.

UC San Diego, ranked 17th in Division III, fell to 8-5-3 after suffering a 3-1 loss to Cal State San Bernardino (9-6). UCSD’s Chris Hanssen scored the first goal of the game, but San Bernardino shut out the Tritons from then on.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

UC San Diego goalie Julie Friess recorded her 13th shutout of the season in a 3-0 decision over Cal State San Bernardino at UCSD. UCSD (13-1) picked up goals from Felicia Faro, Heather Mauro and Sheila Takahashi.

VOLLEYBALL

Jennifer Miller, San Diego State’s starting freshman middle blocker, came up with eight blocks and Angela Martin added 11 digs and 10 kills as the Aztecs beat San Jose State, 15-3, 15-3, 15-3. Amy Erben led the Aztecs (14-12, 4-6 in the Big West) in kills with 11.

UC Riverside, ranked first in NCAA Division II, defeated host UC San Diego, 15-9, 15-3, 15-2. UCSD (15-11), ranked third in NCAA Division III, was led by Diana Klintworth with 10 kills. Riverside is now 18-3.

The Toreras’ losing streak reached 10 with their 15-7, 15-10, 15-5 West Coast Conference loss to Portland (11-11, 4-3) in Oregon. Angie Rais had 11 kills for USD (1-17, 0-6).

Terri Gilbert had 19 kills to lead Westmont, ranked No. 4 in the NAIA, to a 15-6, 15-3, 12-15, 17-15 victory over Point Loma Nazarene in a Golden State Athletic Conference match.

Tracy Daniels had nine kills for PLNC (12-7, 5-5). Westmont is 19-4, 8-1.

Stephanie Milbrandt had 18 kills and USIU teammate Heather Kelley added 15 as USIU (3-12) took Cal State Northridge (13-10) to five games before dropping the match, 15-10, 4-15, 15-1, 11-15, 15-12.

WATER POLO

UC San Diego, ranked ninth in the NCAA open division, defeated visiting Loyola Marymount, 14-3. Jason Brown and Greg Goodrich each scored three goals for UCSD (14-11). Loyola Marymount dropped to 8-7.

TENNIS

Jose Luis Noriega, a 1988-89 All-American from USD, lost in the second round of the Volvo Collegiate Championships in Athens, Ga., to Jonathan Stark from Stanford, the 1989 Junior U.S. Open champ, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7).
