Nguyen Rallies Bolsa Grande Past La Quinta

Sonny Nguyen rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another as Bolsa Grande High School overcame a 14-point deficit to upset La Quinta, 35-24, before 700 Friday in a Garden Grove League game at Bolsa Grande.

Nguyen, a senior quarterback, scored on runs of 35, 34 and 27 yards, and threw a three-yard second-quarter touchdown pass to Trent Wood. The Matadors (4-3, 3-1) were also sparked by a 136-yard rushing performance by tailback Carlos Torres. Nguyen rushed for 101 yards in nine carries. He completed five of 11 passes for 75 yards. He suffered one interception.

After La Quinta (3-4, 2-2) scored its third touchdown of the first half, Bolsa rallied with a 57-yard drive as Nguyen scored with 2:54 left in the half to make the halftime score, 21-14. The Matadors scored three unanswered second-half touchdowns, the last a one-yard run by Torres.
