COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Top-Ranked Irvine Wins Sixth in a Row

Top-ranked UC Irvine defeated UC Santa Barbara, 15-5, at Heritage Park in a Big West conference water polo match Saturday.
Julian Harvey had five goals, Tom Warde had four and Dan Smoot had three to lead Irvine, which improved to 16-2 overall and 4-0 in conference. It was Irvine’s sixth consecutive victory.
UC Santa Barbara dropped to 8-10 overall and 2-5 in conference.
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s soccer:
CS Dominguez Hills 3, Chapman 2--Pat Fitzgerald scored a penalty kick for Dominguez Hills (8-6-1, 2-3-1) with 2:15 left in the match. Kevin Olsen scored both goals for visiting Chapman (6-7-3, 1-3-1).
In nonconference women’s soccer:
CS Dominguez Hills 8, Chapman 0--Dominguez (15-2) scored seven goals in the second half and Chapman (4-9-2) did not take a shot in the match.
In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:
Cal State Fullerton 3, San Jose State 0--San Jose State swept, 15-6, 15-12, 15-10, to improve to 9-6 overall and 4-5 in conference. Cal State Fullerton (6-13, 1-9) was led by Val Thurman’s 13 kills, Sabrina Dennis’ 12 kills and Susan Herman’s nine kills.
In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:
Azusa Pacific 3, Southern California Christian 0--Azusa Pacific came from behind to defeat host SCC, 15-10, 15-9, 5-15, 0-15, 15-11. Heather Frewin had 24 kills for SCC (8-15, 2-9), and teammate Krista Hoover added 18 kills.
In the Southern California College cross-country invitational at the Back Bay course in Newport, Genevieve Graff of Christ College Irvine set the 3.1-mile course record with a time of 18 minutes 47 seconds in the women’s division, but Southern California College won by default with a score of 26. Christ College Irvine, Christian Heritage and Blythe Bible College could not field full teams.
Graff has not lost a race this year.
In the men’s division, Blythe Bible defeated SCC, 35-42. CCI and Heritage Christian did not field full teams. Mark Messner of Blythe Bible was first on the five-mile course with a time of 25:31. SCC took the next three spots: Mel Brown (26:57) was second, Jim Bryan (28:40) was third and Troy Bailey (28:55) was fourth. SCC’s Sherri Hall (18:56) was second and Amber Levertt (20:16) was third. Christ College Irvine’s Rene Carroll (22:08) was fourth.
