Steelmakers Consider New Joint Venture: USX Corp. said it plans a second joint venture with Kobe Steel Ltd. of Japan, this one a sheet steel galvanizing line that would serve auto makers. The two firms, as USS-Kobe Steel Co., jointly operate a former USX plant at Lorain, Ohio. The companies plan to design and build a state-of-the-art plant somewhere in the Midwest to produce 600,000 tons per year. Construction could begin next spring and production could begin two years later. USX is the nation’s largest steelmaker. Kobe is Japan’s fifth-largest steelmaker.
