An unidentified man who was lying across train tracks behind a Simi Valley bar was struck and killed by an Amtrak train that could not be stopped in time to avoid him, police said this morning.

The man, who carried no identification, was killed about 9:45 p.m. Sunday behind the Regency Bar in the 1600 block of Los Angeles Avenue, Lt. Bob Klamser said.

No foul play is suspected, but police have not been able to determine what the man was doing there, whether he had been drinking or if his death was a suicide, Klamser said.

The train was headed to Santa Barbara at 70 m.p.h. when an engineer spotted the man lying on the tracks about 200 feet away. A horn was sounded and the train’s emergency brakes were applied, but the man did not respond and the train struck him, Klamser said.
